Let me turn on the video here so you can see my smiling face. There we go. Good morning. This is John Heinrich calling again. I’m channeling my early Larry Winget in my shirt today. For those of you who don’t know who Larry was, he was a well-known management consultant in the nineties and who was famous for his loud Hawaiian shirts.

Anyway, what I wanted to talk to you about today is, at least in the media, there is a perception that we are in a recession, the sky is falling, and things are just not that good.

Now, to a certain extent, I’m fortunate in the sense that I live in Arizona, where things are doing pretty well; they’re slow; when I talk to my clients, they’re a little slower than they were last year. But they’re not bad.

0:55
And that’s the point of my talk, which is that you shouldn’t really worry about too much. I mean, all entrepreneurs worry, but you shouldn’t really worry too much about what’s going on in the economy.

You know, you can control what you can control. My experience has been that if you boost recessionary times your marketing expenses, tune up your sales force, and maybe add a distributor or two where you don’t have them, and you know you don’t have them.

1:27
Your sales will keep growing. I mean, in my first company, I went through two recessions, and we still managed a compound annual growth rate of about 25% over seven years.

1:40
So that was pretty significant. But that’s the point. Don’t you know, do what you can do, do you, do you, and don’t worry about the economy because you actually have it within your power as a leader. Whether you wear loud Hawaiian shirts or not to actually affect your own company and your own personal destiny.

2:03
So that’s the message. I wouldn’t say don’t worry and be happy because all entrepreneurs are chronic worriers anyway. ‘Cause you never know, you know, the end could be near, but don’t do that. You know, just put your head down, boost your marketing expenses a little bit. Go look around for additional distribution.

2:23
As one of your competitors got a sales person that you can pry loose all these things to offset what might otherwise be a sales decrease or a slowing of sales. So do it. Don’t worry. Be happy. Get along with it. Thanks for listening.
