I want to welcome you to the Business Success School. We’re the next iteration of the American School of Entrepreneurship, which was so successful its format was imitated by Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and the Khan Academy. Our mission is the same: to help you, the business owner, become or stay a success. We’ve chosen our courses based on what you can’t find elsewhere , ones that we know will make you more successful, based on our solutions forum experience over the last 20 years. We’ve kept the courses short, because we know all entrepreneurs have add. Seriously, we know you’ve got a lot to do, a little time to do it, and we’ve got to fit into your schedule. We’ve tried to do that. As always, if you’ve got an idea for a course, or a comment, call me personally at 480-200-5678.
Adm. William H. McRaven offered some advice in his 2014 commencement speech to the graduating class
at the University of Texas. Here are the 10 things he learned from being a Navy SEAL.
If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.
For the boat to make it to its destination, everyone must paddle.
Measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers.
Sometimes, no matter how well you prepare or how well you perform, you still end up as a sugar cookie. It’s just the way life is sometimes.
Life is filled with circuses. You will fail. You will likely fall often. It will be painful. It will be discouraging. At times, it will test you to your very core. But if you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses.
If you want to change the world, sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head first.
There are a lot of sharks in the world. If you hope to complete the swim, you will have to deal with them.
Every SEAL knows that under the keel, at the darkest moment of the mission, is the time when you must be calm, composed – when all your tactical skills, your physical power, and all your inner strength must be brought to bear.
If I have learned anything in my time traveling the world, it is the power of hope. The power of one person – Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela, and even a young girl from Pakistan, Malala – one person can change the world by giving people hope.
In SEAL training, there is a bell. A brass bell that hangs in the center of the compound for all the students to see. All you have to do to quit is ring the bell. If you want to change the world, don’t ever, ever ring the bell.
